The science, honestly
Sleep apps love the word “proven”. This page does the opposite: it lists the actual evidence for cognitive shuffling — what exists, how strong it is, and where it is thin. We would rather you trust the app because we told you the truth.
The theory
Cognitive scientist Dr. Luc P. Beaudoin (Simon Fraser University) published the theoretical framework in 2013: falling asleep is easiest when mental activity is engaging yet incoherent — vivid enough to occupy the mind, too disjointed to become worrying. He called the deliberate version “serial diverse imagining”: picturing a series of unrelated things, one after another. That is exactly what this app has you do.
The study
At the SLEEP 2016 conference, Beaudoin and colleagues presented a randomized study of 154 university students with racing bedtime thoughts. Participants used a serial-diverse-imagining app (recorded words, one every 8 seconds), structured problem-solving, or both. After one week and one month, all measured outcomes — cognitive arousal, somatic arousal, sleep effort and sleep quality — improved significantly, with large effect sizes. The imagining task worked as well as structured problem-solving while needing no clinical supervision.
The essential caveat: this was published as a conference abstract, not as a peer-reviewed full paper, and as of early 2026 no full randomized controlled trial of the technique has been published. That is the strongest direct evidence there is. Encouraging — and thin. Journalists covering the technique in 2025–2026 note the same.
Why it plausibly works
Research on pre-sleep cognition (Harvey, 2000) found that people with sleep-onset insomnia differ from good sleepers mainly in what their minds do in bed: more worrying about problems, less thinking about “nothing in particular”. Techniques that displace structured worry with aimless imagery target precisely that difference. Cognitive shuffling is one pleasant, drug-free way to do so.
How the app follows the research
The 2016 study spoke one recorded word every 8 seconds; the app’s tempo settings bracket that interval. Words are concrete, neutral and easy to picture, spoken one at a time with nothing to look at — the phone lies face down. Where the research is silent (for example, precisely which words work best), we make reasoned design choices and say so, rather than inventing citations.
What we will never claim
Not “scientifically proven”. Not a treatment for insomnia or any medical condition. If you suspect a sleep disorder, see a doctor. This app is a well-crafted implementation of a promising, pleasant technique — that is the whole claim, and the evidence above is all of the evidence.
